SAHLiNi - La Femme
SAHLiNi perfumes have two problems (other than the annoying way the name is randomly capitalized): First is the limited distribution and the second is the name. It's too similar to Shalini- the notoriously expensive Maurice Roucel white floral creation in a gorgeous Lalique bottle ($990, 2.2oz, available at Aedes). Maybe that's the reason for the capital letters in SAHLiNi's name.
The brand SAHLiNi Parfums is owned by French designer Celine Sahlini Martin and inspired by her Indian heritage. Her goal was to incorporate the warmth of India with classic French perfumery. A nice idea, really. Original? Not so much, considering oriental perfumes were born around the turn of the 20th century, not the 21st. Still, a creamy vanilla-sandalwood-patchouli base under a heady and intricate floral heart are a welcome thing in my world.
La Femme is a big (BIG!) floriental- the kind of perfume that would have felt right at home in the 80s. It's one of those that even I, lover of statement-making scents, would urge you to be careful when spraying. Seriously. One spritz is more than enough and would still get you noticed. It's so pretty, though, that as long as your skin chemistry cooperates, compliments are almost guaranteed.
La Femme is a very apt name. While I'm the last person to care about gender in perfume, I doubt many men would find it wearable. It's something about the trio of orange blossom (it smells like the absolute, not the steam distilled neroli), jasmine and tuberose. Something about the way they were blended here is almost overwhelming but in a good way: it's toe-curling. The base is sweet and rich. There's no rice note there but it reminds me of an orange-blossom scented Indian dessert.
Is it wrong to wish there was something a little more edgy to come between the silk sheet beauty of the floral heart and that creamy sandalwood pudding of the dry-down? A little incense, maybe, or just that they would have made the patchouli earthier and dirty? I enjoy wearing SAHLiNi La Femme, but there's something in there that feels like a guilty pleasure, though it's hard to put my finger on the exact reason- there's nothing wrong in wearing a feather boa, right?
La Femme ($95, 50ml) and the other SAHLiNi perfumes can be purchased at select locations (mostly in Europe) and worldwide from sahliniparfums.com. Mini roll-ons and sample sets are also available directly from the website.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo upbeat ahead of AC Milan test
Cristiano Ronaldo goes into Real Madrid’s Champions League tie at AC Milan on Wednesday warning the Italians that he is in “phenomenal shape” as well as the richest vein of scoring form of his career.
La Liga’s top scorer hit another double in Real’s 3-1 win at Hercules to take his tally to 10 goals in four league outings in October.
Ronaldo netted 13 times in nine matches in all competitions last month, including two for Portugal in Euro 2012 qualification, to better his nine in six games for Manchester United in January 2008.
“I am in phenomenal shape and on a great run of form,” Ronaldo said. “I have been feeling good for a number of matches now.”
Ronaldo also praised coach Jose Mourinho for his part in Real turning round a 1-0 interval deficit to beat Hercules on Saturday.
“At half-time he gave the perfect orders to change the team,” Ronaldo said. “In the second half we did everything perfectly.”
Real, who have gone two years without winning any major silverware, are unbeaten after nine matches and lead the table by a point from Barcelona.
In Italy, Antonio Cassano, who had appeared to have outgrown his bad-boy image, is battling to save his career with Sampdoria, who have asked for permission to terminate the striker’s contract after he swore at club president Riccardo Garrone last week. “I’m sorry for what happened and I’ve already apologised to Mr Garrone. As long as there is a possibility, I want to stay at Sampdoria,” said Cassano, who missed yesterday’s 1-0 win at Cesena.
Ahead of next weekend’s Rome derby, Lazio moved four points clear in Serie A following a backs-to-the-wall 1-0 win at Palermo.
Borussia Dortmund equalled a club record with their fifth successive away win as they went to the top in Germany after winning 2-0 at previous leaders Mainz.

Harney & Sons Opening A NYC Tea Store
It's interesting but hardly surprising that many perfume lovers are also interested in high-quality tea. Let's see: bergamot, jasmine, lavender, osmanthus, smoky notes... we can drink as well as wear them, not to mention my favorite vanilla-flavored black tea.
One of my favorite fall trips is driving up north to Millerton, NY (rt. 22, right on the New York-Connecticut border) and visit Harney & Sons Tasting Room. I usually order their teas online, but it's still a fun ritual and the adjacent store has all kinds of tea paraphernalia, including home fragrances.
The nice people of Harney & Sons are about to open a tea store and tasting bar in NYC. The address is 433 Broome St. (SoHo) and the opening is mid-November according to this WSJ article.

UK Chart Roundup: Cheryl Cole Proves That Amateur Hour Is A Hit With The Kids
After Cheryl Cole triumphantly mimed 90% of her single "Promise This" on the The X Factor last week—an act that was exceptionally classy because at one point the words were still coming over the speakers while she was already using her hands to cover her mouth during an extremely intricate bit of choreography—the High Priestess Of British Soul has debuted at #1 on the UK chart. Spectacular!
This marks Cheryl's second chart topper in her home country. "Fight For This Love" reached #1 at the end of October last year.
Moving on to far classier broads, Joe McElderry's "Ambitions" slips down two positions to #23 in its third week on the singles chart, while the awesome collection of pop choons that is his debut album Wide Awake debuts on the LP roundup at #3. Holiding Joe off from the top of the chart is Kings Of Leon's Come Around Sundown, which is #1 for a second week. At #2 is Michael Buble's Crazy Love—an album that is now over a year old.
Oh, Joe. Can his career be saved from a Leon Jackson-like doom? Guess it all hinges on how far down Wide Awake slips next week.
The U.K. Top 10:
1. "Promise This" - Cheryl Cole * new* *1 week*
2. "Only Girl (In The World)" - Rihanna *new*
3. "Just The Way You Are" - Bruno Mars
4. "F**K You" - Cee Lo Green
5. "Cooler Than Me" - Mike Posner
6. "Firework" - Katy Perry
7. "Barbra Streisand" - Duck Sauce
8. "Just A Dream" - Nelly
9. "Heart Vacancy" - The Wanted
10. "Written In The Stars" - Tinie Tempah
