Avril Lavigne Lines Up Another Max Martin Song For Her Next Single

Avril Lavigne's lead Goodbye Lullaby single "What The Hell" failed to crack the Top 10 on the Hot 100—and it got so close, scraping its way to #11 like a one-legged whore reaching for a nickel with her toes—but at least the song has sold steadily since its January release.

But now that the album has been out for over four weeks, it's time for another single. Two weeks ago on Twitter, Avril asked her flock of Gucci-punk worshipers if they preferred "Smile" or "Push" for her second release off Goodbye Lullaby. And according to Digital Spy, it looks like "Smile" won out.

I've been sick as a dog since I returned from a trip back to Pennsylvania this past weekend, so sorry for things been quiet around here this week so far. Nevertheless, this morning I dragged myself to the computer to bang out a few thoughts on what's been going down on Planet Pop over the past three days. Read' 'em below.

21st Century Flop



I like the part where Cicely Tyson screams at the beginning of Willow Smith's "21st Century Girl" video—you know, like the Roc Nation bean counters are doing when comparing the budget of the clip to the fact that the song is only #165 on iTunes.

Baby Shut Your Mouth



I've been maintaining that "Inside Out" is the best one of the half dozen Britney Spears Femme Fatale song snippets to pop up in recent weeks, and this lengthier clip that leaked yesterday just goes to prove it.

Blow My Speakers Up



Avril Lavigne covering Ke$ha for Radio 1 Live Lounge is good stuff. Quote from Avril's Billboard interview about her new album, which is out now: "I found myself in a situation on my fourth record with a bunch of people at the label who I didn't know, and they're coming in on my project and saying, 'Here's what we think you need to do for your record,' and giving me their vision. And radio's so rhythmic/dance-driven right now, and that's not where I was going with this record. So I had to fight and say no, but… I ultimately made the record I wanted to."

Notorious K.I.M.

I love a good train wreck, so I ordered Lil Kim's Black Friday mixtape (via PayPal—class!) a few weeks back. And while she appears to have sliced off Nicki Minaj's head on the cover of the 20-track affair, it's her butchering of Rihanna's Loud track "Man Down" that assures me that this was a sound investment.

US Chart Roundup: Britney Plummets While The Fuck Songs Keep Climbing

Now that the frenzy over Britney Spears' new-ish single "Hold It Against Me" has blown over, the Dr. Luke/Max Martin dance-pop jam winds up being unable to sustain a lengthy stay at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and thus plunges to #6 like a scrawny one-eyed whore who just spotted a nickel on the ground in the alleyway behind Rite-Aid on a Sunday morning. This past weekend "Hold It Against Me" debuted at #6 on the UK chart.

Elsewhere, Enrique Iglesias' sex jam "Tonight (I'm Fuckin' You)" inches up to #4, matching the peak of his 2010 hit "I Like It." And just outside the Top 10, Pink's "Fuckin' Perfect" hops from #30 to #11 thanks to the premiere of the somewhat graphic music video.



I love it when inspirational songs have "fuck" in the title and blood on the wall.

Another chica who takes a tumble on the chart this week is Avril Lavigne, who's "What The Hell" drops from #13 to #31. I don't really know what else to say about that song other than it's paper-thin and simply not that memorable. Like, I never find myself thinking, I really need to hear that song...now!

On a final note, Adele's "Rolling In The Deep"—a #2 single in the UK this week—climbs from #97 to #84.

UK Chart Roundup: Major Britney Spears Fail

Weaveney Spears got her wig handed to hear in a Trenta-sized frappuccino cup today when Bruno Mars' "Grenade" spent a second week atop the UK chart while new singles from Adele, Diddy - Dirty Money and Wretch 32 all debuted higher than "Hold It Against Me" (#6). Here in the States the song is currently #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Initially Sony didn't have the Weaved One's latest slated for release in the UK until the end of February. The label then rushed "Hold It Against Me" onto UK iTunes after it topped the digital download store's charts in 17 other countries. Oops!...Maybe They Should Have Waited Until Wigney Was Available For In-Person Promotion After All (Again)

US Chart Roundup: The Results Of The Britney Vs. Avril Lavigne Vs. Kanye & Jay-Z Battle

We've already gone through this twice this week, so no need to ramble on about Britney Spears debuting at #1 with "Hold It Against Me," thereby giving her a fourth chart-topping single and producer/God Max Martin his 10th, etc. So let's move ahead...

Avril Lavigne's "What The Hell" enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #13, which shows the power of radio airplay—something Britney's single was aided by, but Avril clearly was not. For a few days after being released, "What The Hell" was just beneath Britney at #2 on iTunes. But then she flip-flopped with Kanye West and Jay-Z's "H.A.M." (which enters at #23). In the end, both of those singles got barreled over at radio in lieu of Britney and slid down the digital store's song chart.

Now that the holiday craziness has settled for good, Edward Maya's "Stereo Love" is able to jump back up to its previous peak position of #16. Another climber: Pink's "Fuckin' Perfect," which moves up 27 positions to #30 and is the Hot 100's "airplay gainer" this week. If we're to include the collaborative 2001 cover of "Lady Marmalade," this now gives Pink a total of 17 Top 40 singles in the U.S.

One of my guilty pleasure jams from last year, Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson's "Don't You Wanna Stay," is at #43 this week. That's just a good old-fashioned duet, like something you'd expect Peter Cetera to have cranked out with some broad in the '80s.

On a final note, album sales really appear to be in the dumpster (more so than usual) in 2011. Cake's Showroom Of Compassion debuts at #1, but has posted the worst returns (44,000 copies) for a top album in Nielsen SoundScan history. It seems like only yesterday when the Dreamgirls soundtrack set the record low, with 60,000 copies. Alas, folks, that was exactly four years ago this month.

It's A Very Short Snippet Of Avril Lavigne's New Single "What The Hell"

When I think of artists who need a good strangling, Kanye West and Katy Perry instantly come to mind first. Then, once that murderous cloud fades, there lies Avril Lavigne's smirking face.

As mentioned earlier this month, Avril's fourth album Goodbye Lullaby is due out March 8. Ahead of that, here's a 35-second snippet of her so far not-unlikeable first single from the LP, "What The Hell."



This is apparently one of the Max Martin jams on Avril's album (according to the ever-reliable Wikipedia).

The only two Avril Lavigne singles I ever had any like for were "Keep Holding On" (total jam) and "Girlfriend" (again, a jam)—i.e. the Dr. Luke ones.

So now that 'vril isn't working with Dr. Luke anymore—but is instead getting help on upcoming fourth album Goodbye Lullaby from her ex-husband Deryck Whibley—toss her in the pop dumpster, right? Wrong! She's also got trash on the album that was swizzed up by Max Martin.

Time will tell whether Lavigne has another "Keep Holding On" stocked away up her skirt. The album is out March 8, 2011. But till then we'll get a taste of the album's first single "What The Hell" when she performs it on Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve.
