I Don't Care Why Pet Shop Boys Are Opening For Take That On Tour, All I Know Is I'm Going

Today it was announced that Pet Shop Boys will be joining Take That on Their European tour. Yes, as an opening act. The same Pet Shop Boys who are noted to have sold over 100 million records worldwide (according to Wikipedia, though this says 50 million), while TT have sold around 40 million.

Were Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe enlisted by the That to babysit their friend Robbie Williams, to make sure he doesn't get into any trouble on the road for the first time in 16 years with his old bandmates? Have the Boys become addicted to a life spent in hotels around the world (they toured their last record Yes forever, it seemed)? Did their pal Stuart Price, who produced the That's latest album Progress, convince them it'd be a good idea?

Says Take That's website:

...Take That are all massive fans. Gary said: "I've followed their whole career and always loved their unique approach to records and live performance. That combined with two lovely people means we're in for a great tour."

Pet Shop Boys said: "We are delighted to accept Take That's invitation to be part of their Progress show and tour which is undoubtedly going to be one of the most exciting events of 2011. We look forward to every night being a huge celebration of pop music."

Truth is, I don't care why they're doing it. All I know is my tickets to the Milan show in July just got a whole lot more fetching.

It's Take That's "Happy Now" Video

Take That's "Happy Now" music vid premiered last night, and this should have absolutely been the band's second (if not first) single release off Progress rather than the third. (The actual second single, "Kidz," peaked at a woeful #28 last month—their lowest chart placing for a UK single since "Once You've Tasted Love" scraped in at #47 20 years ago.)

At any rate, the video, a tie-in with the Red Nose Day, premiered last night after the Comic Relief charity's telethon, and it features comedians like that queen Alan Carr (who I love), David Walliams and Catherine Tate decked out like the That from past videos such as "Pray," "The Flood," "Love Ain't Here Anymore" and "Back For Good."

But most importantly, Howard Donald looks utterly bangable, once again.



Three-and-a-half more months till I see these hot pieces live in Italy!

It's Take That's Spacey "Kidz" Video

If you're looking for a sci fi-themed music video infused with a bit of menace that's a far more enjoyable ride than Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," then look no further than Take That's "Kidz."

The UK man band arrives from outer space and invades the Earth to have a little song and dance in the clip for their second single off their smash album Progress. It's a simple concept—albeit one that borrows from several recent movies—but it works.



I have tickets to see these hot pieces live in Italy in four-and-a-half months. Can't wait!

UK Chart Roundup: Adele And Take That Get A Post-BRITs Boost

Adele's 21 has been on top of the UK album chart for the past four weeks, and while her single "Rolling In The Deep" peaked at #2 (so far), the soulful singer's "Someone Like You" has now leapt to the top of the Brit chart thanks to her performance of it at the BRITs on Tuesday.



Here in the States, 21 will finally be released this coming Tuesday. And thanks to the inclusion of "Rolling In The Deep" in the trailer for trash flick I Am Number Four—which opened this weekend—the song has now cracked the Top 10 on U.S. iTunes.

Like Adele, Take That see a bit of a boost, though not as big, following their military-themed BRITs performance of "Kidz." The single slides in at #31 a week ahead of its official release.

The BRIT Awards, held this evening at London's 02 Arena, seemed to come hours after the Grammys. (Are they always held this close together?) Anyway, Arcade Fire took the International Album award, much the way they won Album Of The Year on this side of the pond on Sunday. The 2011 Brit Awards Nominees

You're looking at the brand spanking new Brit Award, which was designed by Vivienne Westwood. Swanky. It looks like a bowling pin with two strips of bacon wrapped around it.

At any rate, the nominees for the 2011 BRITs were announced today, and as usual there were a few eyebrow-raising choices. For instance, Lip-syncing hag Cheryl Cole is up for British Female Solo Artist and British Single (for "Promise This," which made Chart Rigger's Worst Singles Of 2010 list).

Thankfully there were also nods for Take That (British Group and Album Of The Year), Kylie Minogue and Robyn (both International Female Solo Artist) to offset that travesty.

Totally snubbed: Goldfrapp, whose Head First was album of the year in 2010 in my opinion, and Susan Boyle, who has moved more records worldwide in the past year-and-a-half than Take That and Cheryl Cole combined.

Take That's Next 'Progress' Single Announced

One of the worst kept secrets in Take That Land was confirmed today on the band's official site—that "Kidz" is to be the second single off the million-selling Progress (release date: February 28). And I have to say, this is a much better choice than the rumored-to-have-been-scrapped-single "SOS." (Though, c'mon, lads—why not go for the far superior "Happy Now" already?)

Even though its been documented that it is in fact Robbie Williams singing the chorus on the largely Mark Owens-dominated "Kidz", XOLondon and I have had several discussions about how it actually sounds suspiciously like Gary Barlow's vocals.

UK Chart Roundup: The Final List Of The 40 Best-Selling Singles & Albums Of 2010

There are no major new singles in the UK chart this week—though I've listed the week's Top 10, as usual, below—so instead we'll turn toward the final tally of the 40 best-selling singles and albums across the pond, as published today by the Official Charts Company.

What's interesting to note is that the singles that charted at #1 through #7 this week wound up on the list of the 40 top sellers of 2010. Eminem and Rihanna's "Love The Way You Lie", the #1 single of the year, sold a total of 856,000 copies, while X Factor winner Matt Cardle's "When We Collide" (#2) sold 815,000 in just three weeks.

Meanwhile, Take That's Progress, the top album of the year, moved 1.84 copies, easily outselling Michael Buble's Crazy Love (#2, 1.23 million) and Lady Gaga's The Fame (#3, 1.05 million).

Take That Do Simon Cowell's Private NYE Gig

Both the Daily Mail and the Sun published these classy pics of Take That‚ sans Robbie Williams (who was allegedly in L.A. with his wife for "a family get-together") performing a 35-minute set at Simon Cowell's New Year's Eve party in Barbados.

The That apparently didn't get paid anything for their crooning services, but were given an all-expenses-paid week in the island nation with their families. Plus, added bonus—Howard Donald stripped off his shirt for the paparazzi.

Reportedly both Rihanna and Sinitta were among the 350 partygoers—and if she knew what was good for her, RiRi would have taken off her wig and bowed down to Sinitta, because we know who the real star is there.

Sigh. Only seven-and-a-half months till I see these fuckers live in Milan.

...And Then Howard Donald Took His Shirt Off

All of the members of Take That (except for Robbie Williams—uh oh!) are in Barbados, where Howard Donald took off his shirt on the beach and—well, who really cares what the rest of them were up to. (Actually, the That are performing a private gig in Barbados on New Year's Eve.)

Progress closed out 2010 by becoming the best-selling LP of the year in the UK (total copies sold: 1.8 million), and the final #1 on the album chart across the pond.

Gary Barlow Joins Coldplay On Stage

You may recall when Take That's Gary Barlow joined Coldplay on stage for a rendition of "Back For Good" almost two years ago during a War Child charity gig. Gaz was once again brought out on stage on Sunday during a not-so-secret Royal Court show in Liverpool that Colplay put on to benefit the homeless charity Crisis. And once again they did Take That's 1995 hit "Back For Good."

UK Chart Roundup: Matt Cardle Avoids The Trashmen, Debuts At #1

No surprise here: Matt Cardle, winner of The X Factor 2010, has debuted at #1 in the UK with his elevator-friendly "When We Collide." Where's a good ol' Rage Against The Machine-like Facebook upset campaign when you need one, you ask? Oh, right—that would be The Trashmen's 1963 jam "Surfin' Bird", which sadly only managed to scrape in at #3. Better luck next year, kids. Likewise, Biffy Clyro's original version of "When We Collide", "Many Of Horror", re-enters the chart at #8.

Michael Jackson and Akon's "Hold My Hand" climbs to #10, giving the Gloved Corpse his first new Top 10 hit in the UK since "One More Chance" went to #5 in December 2003.

Meanwhile, over on the album chart, MJ's Michael debuts at #4. Here in the States, the posthumous collection of Jacko jams (that surprisingly doesn't suck) is going toe-to-toe with Susan Boyle's The Gift in the final countdown to next week's #1 on the Top 200.

And while we do seem to love our SuBo over here—the enchanting Vocal Sex Queen Of Scotland's The Gift has been #1 for four non-consecutive weeks now—it's Take That's Progress that truly rules the man band's home country. The album is #1 for a fifth week, and thus becomes the last chart-topping LP of 2010 across the pond.

Take That And A Bunch Of Naked Guys Do The 2010 Royal Variety Performance

Take That, Kylie Minogue and way less talented people who lip sync like Chart Rigger 10 Worst Singles Of 2010 honoree Cheryl Cole took to the stage at London's Palladium last night for the Royal Variety Performance.

The That did their UK hit "The Flood" and "SOS", and during the former they had an army of practically naked dudes on stage with them, apparently acting out the poses on the cover of new album Progress—which, let's be honest, isn't really really as weird as choosing "SOS" as the next single instead of "Happy Now."

UK Chart Roundup: The Black Eyed Eyed Peas Have 'The F.L.O.P.'

It's interesting to see how Nicole Scherzinger's 4,567,893rd attempt at a solo career is unfolding. Following last year's news that Pussycat Dolls were going on hiatus or breaking up or whatever the hell they're doing, Nicole put on her cha-cha thong and won Dancing With The Stars here in the States, then acted as a fill-in judge earlier this year on The X Factor.

And since she got a cushy performance spot on The X Factor last weekend, just as her RedOne-produced jam "Poison" was released, the single has now entered the UK chart at #3. You have to wonder where it would have placed sans the high-profile TV gig?

Oh, well—I'm still torn on what I think of "Poison." It's not un-enjoyable, really...is it?



Anyway, over on the album chart, the Black Eyed Peas flop in at #17 with The Beginning. That's actually a pretty colossal disaster, no? Especially considering The E.N.D. got to #3 in the UK last year.

Even more scandalous is the fact that Billboard reports The Beginning is on track to get bested by Susan Boyle's month-old The Gift on this upcoming week's U.S. album chart, and will likely only sell in the range of 100,000 to 125,000 copies. Says the mag, "For the Peas, that's off quite a bit from the arrival of their last album, The E.N.D., which gave the quartet its first No. 1 last year with a 304,000 unit start according to Nielsen SoundScan."

Yeah, well, too bad lead single "The Time (Dirty Bit)" SUCKS. Elsewhere on the UK album chart, Take That's Progress is #1 for a third week (and thus forces Olly Murs' self-titled debut to enter at #2) while Duffy's Endlessly debuts at #9.

That said, Olly Murs latest jam "Thinking Of Me" is worthy of its #4 entry, while Jessie J's "Do It Like A Dude"—which the blogosphere collectively masturbated over but nobody bought—flops in at #25.

Over on the Brit album chart Take That retain the top spot after selling more than 208,000 copies of Progress in week number two. That gives the LP a grand total of 728,000 copies moved since its release.

Take That Get Saucy With The Host Of 'The X Factor' Italy

I didn't get a chance to post this performance by Take That on the Italian version of The X Factor earlier this week because I was too busy stuffing a turkey. But it's pretty classy, if only for the end bit, after singing "The Flood," where Mark Owen tells the (highly boffable) host he likes his bow tie, and the guy takes it off and gives it to him—causing Jason Orange to then tell the host he likes his trousers.

Naughty.

UK Chart Roundup: Take That Post Best One-Week Album Sales In 13 Years With 'Progress'

Take That and JLS make a bit of a boy band compromise this week, as the former have a massive week with Progress, their sixth studio album—and their first with Robbie Williams since 1995—and the latter take hold of the UK singles chart with "Love You More."

Progress sold roughly 520,000 copies after its release this past Monday, the most for any album in one week in the UK since Oasis' Be Here Now moved 663,000 copies in 1997. Meanwhile, Take That's lead single off the LP, "The Flood", is at #2 on the singles chart for a second week. Debuting at #1 is JLS' Children In Need charity single "Love You More", which has now become the X Factor alums' fourth chart-topper in the past year-and-a-half.

Elsewhere, it's amateur hour for the blandest boy band on the planet, Westlife, as their latest cure for insomnia "Safe" flops at #10. It's now been four years since the low-rent Irish noise makers had a #1 single, and you have to wonder at this point why they don't just hang it up and go live out their boring lives outside of public eye?

Sorry, gents—you can work with John Shanks, producer of the last two Take That albums, but you'll just never be Take That.

On a final note, it's a sad week for Shayne Ward, whose "Gotta Be Somebody" drops from #12 to #24 while third LP Obsession limps into the album chart at #15, and Manchester duo Hurts, whose latest single "Stay" crashes and burns at #50.

Take That and Kylie Minogue performed at yesterday's annual BBC Children In Need charity telethon in London, along with JLS and amateur slag Cheryl Cole. The That, who's new album Progress has been selling like Cheryl outside the Euston Tube station at 3:17 a.m., belted out their 1995 UK #1 single "Never Forget".
