Live for the (long weekend)

The best thing about the impending Royal Nuptials? The two day work week! Wahey...Tuesdays are my day off, so I only have to be in Wednesday and Thursday. Unfortunately we have a new system launch on Thursday, which is also my birthday and we're going to be working flat out to provide our usual standard of service, so there won't be much celebrating going on (8am start, 6/7pm finish, no thanks!)...however, the next day being "that" day means I have have belated celebrations with the people that matter most; and maybe crash a few street parties!

Anyhow, I'm getting ahead of myself. First we need to finish this long weekend, and it will be done in chilled out lazy style.
Yesterday I barely moved off my ass, which was hugely satisfying. Today I predict more of the same, perhaps interjected with a trip to Tesco for essentials; girl cannot live on Easter goods alone (as much as she'd like to try)

Easter Haul!

Sadly that bag did not hold the Prestat egg of my dreams, but it did contain sweets and eggs of the miniature variety!

For the first time in years I was willing and able to take part in some Easter eating

I'll be 24 going on 4.

Today I've ditched the floral dresses for my "jazzy trousers"

Supper in JB

Jun brought us to JB for supper on a whim yesterday and goodness gracious, I didn't know I've been missing out on all the cheap and good food in JB all these years!

Our first stop was at 何明记 Wanton Noodle, a famous Wanton Noodle shop with franchises all over JB. The noodles are handmade and very bouncy!

Then, we popped by an obscure lane along Pelangi for "luk luk", which is essentially very similar to Japanese yakitori. These skewered food are served by make-shift vans that typically only start operating at night. I took the photo below when this particular stall just started operations at 11+pm and it was already terribly packed!

All you need to do is pick up a metal plate, select your favourite skewered food and wait for the servers to grill it (they'll marinate it with salt, pepper and sometimes mayonnaise) before frying to further enhance the taste. You can also choose to have it boiled but I would much rather have unhealthy yet flavourful fried food any time!!

At this rate, it looks like I'll be making more frequent trips to our neighbouring country. ;)

Laurent Bernard

Laurent Bernard at Wessex Estate is one of my favourite joints for chilling out on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Wessex Estate, to me, is one of Singapore's best kept secrets. I like the tranquil surroundings and large fields dotted with preserved black and white colonial styled bungalows from the pre-WWII era.

Every time I head down to Wessex, I feel as though I'm talking a walk down memory lane, back to the days when Singapore was part of the British colony. The rustic, bohemian vibe provides the perfect atmosphere for a quiet afternoon, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Laurent Bernard, previously known as The Chocolate Factory, specialises in chocolates and desserts of impeccable quality. Its hot chocolate is the best I've tasted in Singapore and the chocolate souffle is beyond divine. Unfortunately, the chocolate souffle is only served on certain days at this particular outlet. Nonetheless, you can find the elusive souffle at Laurent Bernard's other outlet at Robertson Quay as it is served there everyday.

Besides Laurent Bernard, I'm a big fan of Colbar as well, which used to be a canteen for the British troops based at Portsdown Road. More on that charming little cafe another time.

Here's what I wore for a casual coffee date with the hubby.

Inner black tank: Dorothy Perkins (3 for $29!)
Bunny Print Tee: ClubCouture
Orange Jeans: Zara
Bag: Marc by Marc Jacobs

Here's a close-up of the bunny print tee from ClubCouture. I love how the bunny resembles my favourite bunny fashionista, Fifi Lapin.

Favorite Things

This bitches is a BBQ Poutine. A specialty in my home town. No it's not BBQ sauce you use when cooking steaks and shit. It's a ketchup based sauce, that tastes amazing, Twice a year my dad makes a big batch of this sauce and sends some to me, and I DIE!
Eating one of these is the first thing i do when i go visit my parents. Delicious!

Pass The Bacon?

''First Lady Michelle Obama is in the midst of a nationwide anti-obesity campaign aimed at shrinking America's collectively expanding waistline. The conservative media are striking back against Mrs. Obama's message of fitness and nutrition by decrying what they see as government intrusion into our pantries.
At least, that's what they're doing when they're not calling Michelle Obama fat.
Rush Limbaugh's long been laying the groundwork for this sexist attack, using stories about the First Lady's nutrition programs to call the fitness-fanatic Mrs. Obama "Michelle, My Butt." (The jab's lack of sense it exceeded only by its lack of self-awareness.)
Yesterday, the resident cartoonists at Andrew Breitbart's BigGovernment.com posted this offering.''

Here Comes Trenta!

''Starbucks Corp. will roll out its biggest drink size yet -- the 31-ounce "Trenta" -- in all of its U.S. coffee shops by May 3, the company said on Sunday.
The new size will be available only for iced coffee, iced tea and iced tea lemonade drinks in the United States. The Trenta is 7 ounces larger than Starbucks' "Venti" cup for iced drinks, which currently is its largest size on offer.
Drinks in the Trenta size will cost 50 cents more than similar Venti-sized iced drinks, the company said.
Seattle-based Starbucks tested the new size in several U.S. markets last year, saying it was responding to customer demand for larger cold beverages.
The Trenta size will debut in 14 states, including Virginia, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Hawaii and Arizona, on Jan. 18 and in California on Feb. 1.
The world's biggest coffee chain said unsweetened drinks in the new size will have fewer than 90 calories and that sweetened versions will have less than 230 calories.''

The Husband's Recipes: Snow Day Tortilla Soup

This is what I call "making soup out of nothing at all" (and, yes, I just made an Air Supply reference. Shoot me). Originally it was my own invention, not the Blond's, based on a very non-vegetarian recipe I saw somewhere. I simply liked the idea of a soup with grated cheese on top. Lots and lots of cheese. We each prepare it a little differently, but the basics are the same: sort of Mexican-inspired, lots of spices, and have I mentioned cheese?

This is the husband's version in his words (including some musings on cumin):

Snow days are a new and novel concept for me. Growing up in the equivalent of Death Valley weather does not prepare you to 20 inches of snow and roads that are near impassable for a while. We had a few of those recently, and while the white powder is accumulating outside there is nothing better than a thick spicy soup that can be prepared in less than 30 minutes without going to the store.
I’m not a big cumin fan in general and usually have a huge problem with it in perfume. On my skin it always becomes very pungent and too close to BO for comfort. I still remember the first time I tried Serge Noire. The cumin note was so horrible; I had to scrub it off my hand immediately. I now ask the wife to test every new Serge and let me know if it’s safe before even trying on skin.
I do love cumin in this soup as it adds an irreplaceable aroma and taste.

Ingredients (4 small servings or 2-3 larger ones):
1 can tomatoes (diced, whole or crushed, it doesn't really matter)
1 can beans (pinto or kidney.  Really, any type will work fine), rinsed and drained
1 cup corn kernels (from can or defrosted)
1 table spoon extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2 cup water
½ cup white wine
tortilla chips
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
spices (about ½ tea spoon of each) cumin seeds, celery seeds, fennel or anise seeds,
herbs: thyme, marjoram.
salt, pepper and chili flakes to taste.

Preparation:
1. Put 1/2 can of beans and ½ a cup of the corn kernels into the food processor and chop for a few seconds, add the tomatoes with their preservation liquids and process for another 10 seconds or so, depending on what type of tomatoes you use. It should retain some texture but not be too chunky.
2. Grind the seeds  with the rest of the spices. (Gaia roasts the seeds in a pan and then grinds them in a spice grinder. I just grind them in a mortar without roasting. We each maintain our method is much better.)
3. Put a little olive oil in the bottom of a soup pan and heat (medium flame), add the spice mix + chili flakes for a few seconds until fragrant. Add the pureed tomatoes, corn and bean mixture, water and wine with the rest of the whole beans and corn and mix well.
4. After it boils, lower the heat and simmer for 20 minutes or so.
5. Pour into soup bowls and add grated cheese and crushed tortilla chips (we add a lot of each, making it a very thick and rich soup.)

Enjoy.

Kosh demands his share of corn. That's what passes as a treat in a vegetarian household:

Why Didn't I Know About This?

Since when is Starbucks AKA The Love of My Life, serving breakfast? When did this happen? Why didn't anyone tell me about this? How dare they!
